In-display fingerprint scanner is without doubt, the single most awaited feature to come to smartphones. With the displays becoming taller and taller, Smartphone manufacturers were forced to place the fingerprint scanner on the rear of their phones. While Samsung put it in a really awkward place – besides the camera sensor which is a hard place to reach – Apple ditched the Touch ID altogether.
The solution for fingerprint scanners to co-exist with the new displays on the front is put it under the display. There have been many renders in the past, showcasing the feature. Samsung was rumoured to launch the Galaxy S8 with an underglass fingerprint scanner but that didn’t happen.
What happened yesterday was the announcement of world’s first smartphone with underglass fingerprint scanner. Doogee (ever heard of it?), a Spanish company announced the Doogee V. The Spain-based company is expanding its presence and we might get to see their first smartphone in India soon.
Talking about the Doogee V, apart from being in the ‘world’s first’ category it’s also in the ‘iPhone X-like notch’ category. The Doogee V features a ‘notch’ at the top which shows that the design is inspired by iPhone X. (Be prepared to see more of this design language from brands like ViVo and Oppo).
Doogee is yet to reveal the complete details about the Doogee V. The front of the Doogee V is dominated by a 6.2-inch display, which might have a Full HD+ resolution. The company has uploaded a new video on its official YouTube channel showcasing the product (in which, the display is termed as ‘flexible display. We are not sure of what that really means). Apart from the display, we can see a dual camera setup at the rear and a USB Type-C at the bottom. The Spanish manufacturer may reveal the complete specifications, pricing, and availability of the smartphone at the CES 2018 floor.
Vivo is expected to launch a phone sporting under-display fingerprint scanner at the CES 2018 event in collaboration with Synaptics. The smartphone is allegedly called as Vivo X20 Plus. And according to the rumours, OnePlus 6 could launch with an underglass fingerprint scanner too.
