More-of-display, less-of-bezel approach has been quite interesting from the smartphone manufacturers. We have seen it all – from the fingerprint sensor placement besides the camera sensor (Samsung) to dropping the Touch ID all together (Apple) – in the past one year. To bring back the fingerprint scanner at a more convenient place (front of the device) Synaptics, in December, announced a fingerprint scanner for smartphones that can be placed under the display. The company said a “Tier 1” manufacturer would introduce the first phone with the tech at CES 2018.
Yesterday Vivo confirmed that and announced world’s first ready-to-produce in-display fingerprint scanning smartphone that uses an optical fingerprint sensor from Synaptics. Vivo is calling it’s Under Display Fingerprint Scanning Solution – Vivo Under Display.
When Can We Expect Vivo’s first In-Display Fingerprint Scanning Smartphone To Hit The Market?
The Vivo Under Display allows users to unlock their devices through one-touch fingerprint scanning directly on the smartphone display. The in-display fingerprint sensor sits between the mainboard and the OLED panel. When a user places his finger over the sensor, it illuminates the finger and then processes the beams of light.
According to Alex Feng, Senior VP at Vivo, the phone is ready for mass production and should be announced in “early 2018”.
