The newest device to the Microsoft Surface family is built and being marketed towards students. At $999 this seems a bit unrealistic, but what it offers – power packed performance, amazing battery life and good specs – is not bad at all! Is it for you? Let’s find out.
“Surface Laptop elevates design and performance to an artful blend of luxurious touches, ease of use, discreetly hidden Omnisonic Speakers, and a brilliant interactive touchscreen.” says Microsoft. It is indeed an artftul blend of luxurious touches with the touch keyboard having a unique, smooth fabric coating which glides perfectly along your fingers.
There aren’t any speaker grills in the casing, instead it sports ‘vapour chambers’ in the chassis to keep the temperrature of the laptop down.
In terms of ports, Microsoft has decided not to go wiith the USB-C but a single USB-A port, a SD card slot and a Mini Display port (and a headphone jack, ofcourse). At 1.25kg it’s light and easy to carry around.
Display and Battery
The screen on the Surface Laptop is 13.5-inch with a 1080p PixelSense Display (3.4 million pixels) 3:2 aspect ratio. And the edge-to-edge display is covered in Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Microsoft said that the display is the “thinnest LCD touch model ever created and put into a laptop.”
On the battery front, the Surface Laptop has 14.5 hours of battery life as compared to 8 hours on the Macbook Pros.
Windows 10 S
This new variant of Windows 10 is very much like the main version, except for one big difference – it only allows you to download apps from the Windows Store. This approach is said to improve two things: security and speed. All Windows Store apps are verified by Microsoft themselves and are optimised so that they use the very least amount of system space. You’ll have to pay to get the standard version of Windows 10.
“Microsoft Edge is the default web browser on Microsoft 10 S. You are able to download another browser that might be available from the Windows Store, but Microsoft Edge will remain the default. Additionally, the default search provider in Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer cannot be changed,” said Microsoft in a support page.
Google Chrome and Firefox are not in the Windows store but Opera Mini can be downloaded from the Windows Store (but no other browser can be changed to default).
This actually seems like Microsoft’s take on Apple’s Macbook OS’ to me.
Though you can update this OS to the standard version of Windows 10 till December 2017.
Power-packed machine with a hefty price tag
Inside of the Surface Laptop is either Intel’s 7th-generation Core i5 or i7 processors. The memory starts at 4GB and it maxes out at 16GB. And the SSD size starts at 128GB and maxes out at 1TB. The starting price of Surface Laptop is $999 and goes upto $1599.
The new Surface Arc Mouse: “Slim, light, and ready to travel, Surface Arc Mouse is designed to conform to your hand — and snaps flat to fit easily in your bag”-Microsoft. It connects via Bluetooth.
Other accessories, namely, Surface Stylus, Surface Dock and Surface Dial are also compatible with the new Surface Laptop.
